Gevgelija
Gevgelija, located in the southernmost part of North Macedonia along the Vardar River, is a vibrant town situated close to the border with Greece. Its position on one of the Balkans’ most important transport corridors has historically made it a gateway connecting North Macedonia with Thessaloniki and the wider Mediterranean region. The area’s warm climate and fertile surroundings give Gevgelija a distinctly southern character, reflected in its vegetation, agriculture, and everyday way of life. Today, the town combines its strategic location with a lively urban atmosphere and access to numerous cultural and natural attractions.
The wider Gevgelija region preserves traces of human settlement and cultural development extending from antiquity through the medieval period. Vardarski Rid, situated near the town on the banks of the Vardar River, is one of the area’s most important archaeological sites and contains remains connected with ancient, Hellenistic, Roman, and later cultures. Historic churches, traditional settlements, and archaeological discoveries throughout the municipality further illustrate the region’s long and diverse past. Together, these sites reveal Gevgelija’s historical importance as a place where different peoples, cultures, and routes have met for centuries.
Beyond the town itself, visitors can explore the landscapes of Mount Kožuf, the mineral springs of Negorci Spa, and the natural surroundings of Smrdliva Voda. The region offers opportunities for mountain recreation, relaxation, nature exploration, and discovering the rural settlements of southern North Macedonia. Gevgelija’s cafés, restaurants, local cuisine, and warm climate also contribute to its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The combination of archaeological heritage, southern landscapes, natural attractions, and its role as a gateway to the country gives Gevgelija a distinctive identity within North Macedonia.
