Kavadarci

Kavadarci, located in central North Macedonia in the heart of the Tikveš region, is a city strongly associated with vineyards, wine production, and the landscapes of the Vardar Valley. The surrounding area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological remains from the Neolithic, ancient, and medieval periods. Its warm climate and fertile land have played an important role in shaping both the local economy and the character of the region. Today, Kavadarci combines a strong agricultural tradition with cultural heritage, urban life, and access to some of central North Macedonia’s most distinctive natural landscapes.

Wine is one of the defining elements of Kavadarci’s identity, with viticulture in the Tikveš region tracing its roots back to ancient times. Vineyards stretch across the surrounding countryside, while winemaking traditions remain closely connected with local customs, celebrations, and everyday life. The annual Tikveš Grape Harvest celebrates this heritage and reflects the long relationship between the region and grape cultivation. Historic churches, medieval remains, caves, and archaeological sites further contribute to the cultural richness of Kavadarci and its surroundings.

Beyond the vineyards, the wider municipality includes the landscapes of Mount Kožuf, the Vitačevo plateau, and Tikveš Lake, the largest artificial reservoir in North Macedonia. These areas provide opportunities for hiking, nature exploration, photography, and discovering the quieter countryside surrounding the city. Local cuisine and wine experiences offer visitors another way to connect with the traditions of the Tikveš region. The combination of wine culture, history, natural scenery, and local hospitality gives Kavadarci a distinctive place among North Macedonia’s destinations.
