Kochani

Kochani, located in eastern North Macedonia in the fertile Kochani Valley, is a town best known for its long tradition of rice cultivation. The city lies along the Kochanska River and is surrounded by agricultural land, hills, and the foothills of the Osogovo Mountains. Its favourable natural conditions and abundance of water have shaped both the local economy and the appearance of the surrounding landscape. Today, Kochani combines its agricultural identity with a lively urban centre and a strong connection to the traditions of eastern North Macedonia.

Rice is the defining symbol of Kochani and has been cultivated in the region for centuries. The extensive rice fields surrounding the town create one of the most distinctive agricultural landscapes in North Macedonia, while the annual Days of Kochani Rice celebration preserves customs connected with planting, harvesting, food, music, and traditional culture. The city also contains important cultural and historical landmarks, including medieval towers, churches, archaeological sites, and the Monument of Freedom. Together, these elements reflect the long history and local traditions that have shaped Kochani and the wider valley.

Beyond the town, the Osogovo Mountains provide opportunities for hiking, nature exploration, and mountain recreation, with Ponikva among the best-known nearby destinations. The wider region is also notable for thermal water resources, rural landscapes, and traditional villages. Local cuisine, especially dishes prepared with Kochani rice, offers visitors another way to experience the identity of the area. The combination of rice-growing heritage, mountain scenery, cultural landmarks, and local traditions gives Kochani a distinctive place among North Macedonia’s eastern destinations.
