Kriva Palanka

Kriva Palanka, located in northeastern North Macedonia along the Kriva River, is a mountain town surrounded by the forested landscapes of the Osogovo Mountains. Its position on the historic route toward Bulgaria gave the town strategic importance and helped it develop as a centre of trade, crafts, and mining. The river, surrounding hills, and traditional urban areas create a distinctive landscape shaped by both nature and centuries of settlement. Today, Kriva Palanka combines its historic character with the peaceful atmosphere of a small mountain community.

One of the region’s most important landmarks is the Monastery of St. Joachim Osogovski, situated approximately three kilometres from the town on the slopes of the Osogovo Mountains. Established during the medieval period and developed over the centuries, the monastery has long served as an important spiritual and cultural centre. Its churches, religious art, architecture, and mountain surroundings attract visitors seeking both cultural heritage and tranquillity. The historic Old Bazaar and traditional town houses further preserve elements of Kriva Palanka’s architectural and commercial past.

The wider Kriva Palanka region offers opportunities for hiking, mountain exploration, rural tourism, and discovering the natural beauty of Osogovo. Forests, streams, villages, and mountain paths provide a peaceful setting for visitors interested in outdoor experiences and traditional local life. The town’s proximity to the Bulgarian border also reinforces its historic role as an eastern gateway connecting North Macedonia with neighbouring regions. The combination of spiritual heritage, mountain scenery, traditional architecture, and local history gives Kriva Palanka a distinctive identity within northeastern North Macedonia.
