Makedonska Kamenica
Makedonska Kamenica, located in eastern North Macedonia on the slopes of the Osogovo Mountains, is a small town surrounded by forests, rivers, hills, and mineral-rich landscapes. The municipality extends through the valleys of the Kamenica and Crna rivers and is closely connected with the nearby Kalimanci reservoir. Its geographical position near the Bulgarian border has historically linked the area with the wider eastern Balkan region. Today, Makedonska Kamenica combines the character of a mountain community with an economy and identity strongly shaped by mining and natural resources.
Mining is one of the defining elements of the region, with the Sasa mine situated around ten kilometres north of the town in the Osogovo Mountains. The area is particularly known for deposits of lead and zinc, and mining has played an important role in local employment and development for decades. The surrounding mountainous terrain reflects the rich geological structure of the region and contributes to the distinctive character of the landscape. Together, mining heritage and mountain geography form an important part of the identity of Makedonska Kamenica.
Kalimanci Lake is one of the most recognizable natural landmarks near the town and forms an important part of the wider Bregalnica water system. Surrounded by hills and forested slopes, the reservoir contributes to the scenic character of the area and supports irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. The wider municipality also offers opportunities to discover rural settlements, mountain landscapes, rivers, and the quieter countryside of eastern North Macedonia. The combination of mining heritage, lake scenery, Osogovo landscapes, and local traditions gives Makedonska Kamenica a distinctive identity among the country’s eastern destinations.
