Vevchani
Vevcani, located in western North Macedonia at the foot of Mount Jablanica, is one of the country’s most distinctive traditional settlements. Situated near Struga and Lake Ohrid, the village is known for its mountain setting, abundant water, historic houses, and strong local identity. Its narrow streets, stone walls, traditional architecture, and surrounding forests preserve the atmosphere of an old Macedonian mountain community. Vevcani’s combination of cultural heritage and natural scenery gives the settlement a character unlike many other destinations in the region.
The Vevcani Springs are the best-known natural attraction of the area and are protected as a natural monument. Water emerges from a network of springs beneath Mount Jablanica before flowing through the village along streams, paths, and small bridges. Religious landmarks, including the Church of St. Nicholas and numerous smaller chapels, form another important part of the settlement’s cultural landscape. Traditional houses and historic neighbourhoods further reflect the architecture and way of life that have developed in Vevcani over generations.
Vevcani is also widely known for the Vevcani Carnival, a centuries-old tradition celebrated every January and recognised for its elaborate masks, satire, and distinctive local customs. The event has become one of the most recognizable expressions of the community’s cultural identity and attracts visitors from across North Macedonia and beyond. Outside the carnival season, the surrounding slopes of Mount Jablanica provide opportunities for walking, hiking, nature exploration, and enjoying the peaceful mountain environment. The combination of natural springs, traditional architecture, local customs, and mountain scenery gives Vevcani a unique place within North Macedonia’s cultural landscape.
