Resen
Resen, located in southwestern North Macedonia in the heart of the Prespa Basin, is a town surrounded by mountains, orchards, and the landscapes of Lake Prespa. The wider region lies between the Baba and Galičica mountain ranges and forms part of one of the country’s most distinctive natural environments. Its position close to the borders with Albania and Greece has historically connected Resen with different cultures and regional routes. Today, the town serves as the main urban centre of the Prespa region and a gateway to its villages, lake, and protected natural areas.
One of Resen’s most recognizable architectural landmarks is the Saraj, an early twentieth-century building influenced by European neoclassical architecture. The town is also known for its long tradition of apple cultivation, with orchards extending throughout much of the surrounding Prespa countryside. The annual Prespa Apple Harvest celebrates this agricultural heritage through local products, cultural events, and community activities. Museums, cultural institutions, traditional villages, and religious monuments throughout the municipality further reflect the history and identity of the region.
Lake Prespa is central to the character of the wider Resen area and forms part of an important transboundary ecosystem shared by North Macedonia, Albania, and Greece. Its wetlands, forests, mountain slopes, and protected habitats support a rich variety of plant and animal life, while nearby villages such as Brajčino, Ljubojno, and Stenje preserve traditional rural landscapes. Visitors can explore lakeside settlements, walking routes, mountain scenery, local food, and the agricultural traditions of the Prespa Valley. The combination of lake scenery, apple-growing heritage, historic architecture, and surrounding mountains gives Resen a distinctive identity within North Macedonia.
